Lake County Associate Judge Terrence J. Brady approved a $4.25 million settlement Friday in the case of a 10-year-old girl who suffered brain damage when doctors allegedly failed to treat her in a timely and proper manner at a Waukegan emergency room.

On Jan. 28,1993, Hannah Crowe, who was 15 months old- at the time, was taken to Provena St. Therese Medical Center with symptoms of juvenile diabetes. Plaintiff attorneys said the girl, who was in critical condition, arrived at about 6:45 p.m., but was not seen by any of the three doctors who ultimately were involved in her treatment until about 15 hours later.

In the interim, the lawyers said, a nurse who took a telephone order from a doctor erred while writing down instructions, and the girl was given a saline-free solution intravenously when the solution should have contained saline.

The Crowe family was represented by Robert S. Baizer and Brian J. Lewis of Baizer & Kolar P.C. The hospital was represented by Adam S. Kreuzer of Meyer. Kreuzer, Esp & Cores; Dr. Nandini Upadhyay was represented by Marc F. Benjoya of Cassiday, Schade & GIoor; and Drs. Barry Goldman and Manoochehr Sharifi and The Children's Health Center were represented by Robert P. Huebsch of Querry & Harrow.

The case is Crowe v. Provena St. Therese Medical Center, et al., No. 99 L 860.
